Overview

The Makalu Base Camp Sherpani Col and Amphu Lapcha Pass Trek offers an exhilarating adventure that takes you deep into the heart of the Eastern Himalayas. This expedition begins with a breathtaking 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, where trekkers are treated to stunning aerial views of some of the world's highest peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Kangchenjunga. Once you land, the journey continues with a scenic jeep ride to Num, previously requiring a two-day trek, marking the start of your immersive trekking experience.

As you set out from Num, the trail gradually ascends toward Makalu Base Camp (MBC), located at just under 5,000 meters. This stage of the trek is crucial for acclimatization; rushing could lead to altitude sickness. Thankfully, the trek has evolved with the availability of comfortable lodges along the route, allowing for a more enjoyable experience compared to traditional camping. The journey unfolds over the course of a week, leading you through lush valleys, vibrant rhododendron forests, and quaint villages where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and hospitality.

Reaching Makalu Base Camp is a significant milestone in your journey, where the majestic Makalu mountain looms overhead. Here, you’ll have time to rest, acclimatize, and fine-tune your mountaineering skills before tackling the formidable Sherpani Col. Over the next three days, you'll prepare for the ascent to the 6,146-meter col. The climb is demanding and requires a strong mental and physical commitment. The final ascent is a challenging 500-meter snow slog, and the team will be roped together for safety as they traverse this icy terrain, guided by experienced Sherpas who navigate the conditions with expertise.

Upon reaching Sherpani Col, you will be rewarded with unparalleled views of the vast Baruntse Glacier, with the towering Mt. Baruntse (7,220 m) providing a stunning backdrop. The next phase involves crossing the glacier and making your way to the West Col and Baruntse Camp 1, a journey that is often completed by noon, assuming an early start at midnight. This segment can be arduous, and the descent into the Honku Glacier is particularly technical, requiring careful maneuvering and several abseils. On days like this, a single trek can stretch to an exhausting 16 hours, emphasizing the need for teamwork and careful planning.

After a long and rewarding day, you'll have the chance to rest at Amphu Lapcha Base Camp, preparing for another demanding day ahead. The climb to Amphu Lapcha La offers thrilling views and challenges, including potential abseiling on the descent into the Imja Valley. From here, you’ll journey toward Chhukung, eventually joining the well-trodden Everest Base Camp trail at Dingboche. While you will encounter more trekkers in this area, the preceding days in less-frequented landscapes provide a unique sense of solitude and connection with nature.

As you make your way back to Lukla, the trek leads through picturesque settlements such as Tengboche, where you can visit the famed Tengboche Monastery, and Namche Bazaar, known for its vibrant atmosphere and inviting coffee shops. This walk-out not only allows for reflection on your incredible journey but also gives you a final taste of the local culture and hospitality.

Preparation and Considerations
It is essential for those undertaking the Makalu Base Camp Sherpani Col and Amphu Lapcha Pass Trek to be well-prepared. Physical fitness is crucial, as trekkers should be capable of hiking for up to 8 hours daily while carrying a day pack. Basic mountaineering skills are necessary, including proficiency with an ice axe, crampons, rope techniques, and descending methods. The temperature variations can be extreme, ranging from +20°C during the walk-in to -15°C at high camps and on the Honku Glacier. Therefore, investing in high-quality clothing and gear is paramount for your comfort and safety.

Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition prides itself on offering a well-organized trekking experience, led by experienced guides who prioritize your safety and enjoyment.
