Overview

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) and Mardi Himal Trek is a perfect blend of two iconic trekking routes in Nepal, offering breathtaking landscapes, rich naturel and cultural encounters, and diverse terrains. The journey begins with a scenic drive or a short flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, a beautiful city nestled beside Phewa Lake with stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From Pokhara, a three hour drive takes you to Jhinu Danda (1960 m), the starting point of the trek. The trail then ascends through lush forests and charming villages, leading to Sinuwa (2880 m) after a 3 to 4 hours trek. As the journey continues, the trail gradually climbs through rhododendron and bamboo forests, passing through Bamboo and Dovan before reaching Deurali (3230 m) after six to seven hours of trekking. The landscape transforms into alpine terrain as you make your way towards Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m), where panoramic views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) await.

After witnessing the breathtaking sunrise over the snow-capped peaks, the descent begins toward Bamboo (2310 m), retracing the path through the lush valley. The trek continues downhill towards Jhinu Danda (1780 m), where natural hot springs provide a perfect opportunity to relax. Leaving the Annapurna Base Camp route behind, the adventure transitions toward the lesser-explored Mardi Himal trek. The trail ascends steadily through dense forests, leading to Forest Camp (2600 m), offering a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. From here, the trek continues toward High Camp (3550 m), where the scenery dramatically changes, revealing towering snow-capped peaks and open ridges.

An early morning hike to the Mardi Himal View Point (4500 m) is the highlight of this journey, offering an unforgettable sunrise over the Annapurna range. After taking in the spectacular views, the descent begins towards Rest Camp (2670 m), following a serene forested trail. The trek gradually winds down to Pitam Deurali (2142 m), where a short drive leads back to Pokhara, marking the end of this incredible trekking experience. The next leg of the journey brings you back to Kathmandu, either by drive or flight, concluding an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Himalayas.

The Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek perfectly combines the classic and off-the-beaten-path trails, offering a diverse trekking experience with breathtaking landscapes, rich natural and cultural encounters, and the serenity of the Himalayas. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition ensures a well-organized, safe, and memorable journey with experienced guides and comfortable accommodations, making this adventure an experience of a lifetime.

Major View Points and Mountain Vistas
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) and Mardi Himal Trek offers some of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas in Nepal. As you ascend through lush forests and alpine meadows, the towering peaks of the Annapurna Massif become more prominent. The highlight of the trek is reaching Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m), where you find yourself surrounded by a 360 degree amphitheater of snow-covered giants, including Annapurna I (8091 m), the 10th highest mountain in the world. Other peaks such as Annapurna South (7219 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), and Machhapuchhre (6993 m) stand majestically, creating a breathtaking spectacle, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Apart from ABC, the trek to Mardi Himal View Point (4500 m) offers another stunning vantage point. This viewpoint provides an unparalleled close-up view of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain), which is considered sacred and remains unclimbed. The trek along the ridge to High Camp (3550 m) also rewards trekkers with stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, as well as the vast Modi River Valley below. Unlike the more crowded Annapurna Base Camp, the Mardi Himal route offers solitude and uninterrupted views, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers and photographers.

Throughout the trek, numerous viewpoints such as Poon Hill (if included as an extension), Deurali, and Rest Camp provide breathtaking landscapes. Whether watching the golden glow of sunrise over the Himalayas or witnessing the changing colors of the mountains at dusk, every step of this trek is filled with mesmerizing sights. With clear skies, especially in the autumn and spring seasons, trekkers are rewarded with some of the best mountain views in Nepal.

Natural Attractions and Scenic Landscapes
The trek takes you through a diverse range of landscapes, from lush subtropical forests to rugged alpine terrain. The lower altitudes are covered in dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and bamboo, home to wildlife such as Himalayan pheasants, langurs, and musk deer. In the spring, the trails are painted in vibrant colors as rhododendrons bloom in shades of red, pink, and white, creating a magical forest setting.

As you ascend higher, the vegetation changes into alpine meadows and rocky landscapes, offering a stark contrast to the lush greenery below. The Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) en route to Annapurna Base Camp provides a mesmerizing glacier-carved valley surrounded by towering peaks. The dramatic terrain is dotted with waterfalls, icy streams, and moraines, offering an awe-inspiring Himalayan wilderness experience.

The Mardi Himal section of the trek is known for its pristine and untouched beauty. The trail follows ridges with panoramic views of snow-covered peaks on one side and deep valleys on the other. The trek to High Camp and Mardi Himal Viewpoint is especially rewarding, as you ascend above the tree line into a dramatic landscape of rugged cliffs and snowy ridges. The serenity of this region, with its ever-changing mountain vistas and diverse ecosystems, makes it an unforgettable trekking experience.

Cultural Attractions, Villages, and Monasteries
One of the most enriching aspects of the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of the Gurung and Magar communities. These ethnic groups are known for their warm hospitality, unique customs, and strong ties to the mountains. The villages along the trek, such as Chhomrong, Sinuwa, and Landruk, are traditional settlements where trekkers can experience authentic mountain life.

Along the way, you may also come across Buddhist monasteries, chortens (stupas), prayer flags, and Mani walls, which reflect the spiritual significance of the region. The trail to Mardi Himal, in particular, passes through small, remote settlements where Buddhist influences are evident in the prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the occasional sight of monks on their spiritual journey. The harmonious blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage makes this trek an incredibly rewarding experience.

Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trek
Choosing the right time for the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek is essential for an enjoyable and safe trekking experience. The best seasons for this trek are spring (March to Jun) and autumn (September to December). These months offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks. Spring is particularly beautiful as the trails are covered in blooming rhododendron forests, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. Autumn, on the other hand, provides crisp mountain air and excellent visibility, making it ideal for photography and panoramic views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli.

Winter trekking (January to February) is also possible, but it presents challenges such as heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, especially at higher altitudes like Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m) and Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4500 m). While the landscapes look spectacular with fresh snow, the cold conditions and possible trail blockages can make the journey more demanding. However, winter is the best time for those looking for a quiet and less crowded trekking experience.

The monsoon season (July to August) is the least recommended time for trekking due to heavy rainfall, leeches, and slippery trails. The dense fog often obscures mountain views, and landslides can make certain sections dangerous. However, the lower valleys remain lush and green, and the monsoon clears the air, making post-monsoon trekking (late August to early September) a good option. Overall, spring and autumn remain the most favorable seasons, offering the perfect balance of pleasant weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable trekking conditions.

Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trekking Difficulty Level
The Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek is classified as a moderate to challenging trek, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. The trek involves daily walking of 5 to 7 hours on well-established trails, passing through steep ascents, stone steps, and occasional rough terrain. While no technical climbing skills are required, the long trekking hours, changing altitudes, and occasional steep sections make this a physically demanding journey.

The most challenging sections include the steep ascent to Annapurna Base Camp via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) and the climb to Mardi Himal High Camp and Viewpoint. The higher altitude can cause altitude sickness, so proper acclimatization, hydration, and a steady pace are necessary. The trek also involves several ups and downs, including descending deep valleys and climbing back up through stone staircases, especially in places like Sinuwa, Bamboo, and Chhomrong.

Despite its challenges, the trek is well worth the effort. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and determination, trekkers of all levels can complete this journey successfully. To make the trek easier, Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition provides expert guidance, well-planned itineraries, and acclimatization support, ensuring that every trekker experiences a safe and enjoyable adventure in the Himalayas.

After an early breakfast, we drive from Pokhara to Jhinu Danda, a famous stop on the Annapurna trail known for its natural hot springs. After a short break, we begin our trek by crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi Khola and ascending towards Chhomrong, a picturesque Gurung village with spectacular views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. From here, we descend and then ascend steep stone steps to reach Sinuwa, where we spend the night in a cozy teahouse.

Today’s trek takes us deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary. We start with a gentle walk through a dense rhododendron and bamboo forest before reaching Bamboo village. From here, a steady ascent leads us to Dobhan and then to the Himalaya Hotel, where we take a break. The landscape gradually changes as we ascend further, leaving the lush forest behind and entering a rugged alpine zone. Finally, we arrive at Deurali, a stunning location surrounded by steep cliffs and waterfalls.

Today is one of the most exciting days of the trek as we make our way to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). The trail first takes us to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), offering jaw-dropping views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. From MBC, we continue our gradual ascent towards ABC, where we are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of towering peaks, including Annapurna I (8,091 m), and the 10th highest mountain in the world. We spend the night at the base camp, witnessing a mesmerizing sunset over the snow-capped Himalayas.

Waking up at Annapurna Base Camp is a surreal experience. We enjoy the magical sunrise over the Annapurna range before descending along the same route. The trek down is easier, but we take our time to enjoy the views. We pass through MBC, Deurali, and Himalaya before reaching Bamboo, where we stay overnight.

We continue our descent, retracing our steps through Sinuwa and Chhomrong. The steep stone steps bring us back to Jhinu Danda, where we can relax at the natural hot springs by the river. Soaking in the warm waters is a perfect way to ease any muscle fatigue after several days of trekking.

Leaving the Annapurna Base Camp trail behind, we explore on the Mardi Himal Trek. The trail leads through dense forests filled with rhododendrons, oaks, and ferns, offering a serene atmosphere. As we ascend gradually, we pass through several small settlements before reaching Forest Camp, a peaceful place surrounded by nature.

Today’s trek is both scenic and challenging as we ascend above the tree line. The trail becomes steeper, but the breathtaking views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli keep us motivated. We pass through Low Camp before reaching High Camp, where the landscape transforms into alpine meadows and rocky ridges. From High Camp, we enjoy a stunning sunset view over the Himalayas.

We start early in the morning for the highlight of the Mardi Himal Trek. Hike to Mardi Himal View Point. The challenging ascent is rewarded with a spectacular sunrise and panoramic views of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, and Mardi Himal. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, we descend back to High Camp for breakfast and then continue down to Rest Camp for an overnight stay.

The final day of trekking takes us through lush forests and small villages as we descend towards Pitam Deurali. From here, a short trek brings us to the roadhead, where we catch a private vehicle back to Pokhara. After checking into our hotel, we can enjoy a relaxing evening at Lakeside, celebrating the completion of an incredible trek.

After breakfast, we either take a scenic drive 8 to 9 hrs or a short flight 25 minutes back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we check in at our hotel and have the rest of the day free for shopping, sightseeing, or relaxing. In the evening, we can enjoy a farewell dinner with our trekking team, reflecting on an unforgettable adventure.

Trip Info

Food & Accommodations
The Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek provides a comfortable yet authentic experience when it comes to food and accommodation. Throughout the journey, trekkers stay in tea houses or lodges, which are simple but cozy accommodations run by local families. These tea houses offer basic yet comfortable rooms, typically with twin-sharing beds, blankets, and pillows. While lower-altitude lodges may provide attached bathrooms, at higher elevations, trekkers may need to use shared facilities. At places like Annapurna Base Camp, High Camp, and Deurali, accommodations are more basic due to the remote location.

Food options on the trek are diverse and cater to both local and international tastes. The most popular meal is Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles), a high-energy and fulfilling dish that trekkers often prefer. Other common menu items include noodles, pasta, fried rice, momo (dumplings), soups, chapati with curry, and Tibetan bread. Breakfast choices typically include pancakes, porridge, omelets, and toast with jam or honey. While meat is available in some places, it is recommended to stick to vegetarian meals for hygiene and freshness, especially at higher altitudes.

Tea houses along the route serve a variety of hot drinks, including tea, coffee, and herbal infusions, which are perfect for keeping warm. While food prices increase as you go higher due to transportation difficulties, the availability of warm meals and a welcoming environment makes the dining experience enjoyable. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition ensures that trekkers receive nutritious and hygienic meals throughout the journey, keeping energy levels high for the challenging trek.

Staying hydrated is crucial during the trek, as dehydration can lead to altitude sickness and fatigue. Drinking water is available throughout the route, but trekkers need to be cautious about water safety. Bottled water can be purchased at tea houses and shops, but prices increase with altitude due to transportation costs. To minimize plastic waste and save money, most trekkers opt for refillable water bottles.

Boiled water is available in tea houses for a small fee and is a safe option for drinking. Additionally, many trekkers carry water purification tablets, UV filters, or portable purifiers like Lifestraw or SteriPEN to purify tap or stream water. Natural water sources, such as streams and taps along the trail, can also be used after purification.

Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition promotes sustainable trekking practices by encouraging the use of reusable water bottles and purification methods to reduce plastic waste. Proper hydration not only helps with acclimatization but also ensures trekkers remain energized and healthy throughout the journey.

Charging Facilities
With the increasing demand for electronic devices such as phones, cameras, and GPS trackers, charging facilities are an important consideration for trekkers. Tea houses along the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal routes provide charging stations, but electricity is limited and often available for a fee. At lower altitudes, charging may be free in some lodges, but as you ascend, especially at Deurali, ABC, and High Camp, charging costs range from USD 2 to 5 per device due to the use of solar panels or limited hydroelectric power.

To avoid extra expenses and ensure uninterrupted access to power, many trekkers carry power banks and solar chargers. A high-capacity power bank can last several days, allowing trekkers to keep their phones and cameras charged for capturing the stunning Himalayan scenery. Solar chargers are also a great option, especially for longer treks, as they utilize the abundant sunlight at higher elevations.

It is important to note that power availability may be affected by weather conditions. During peak trekking seasons, lodges may prioritize charging facilities for essential uses, so having backup power sources is always a good idea. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition advises trekkers to carry extra batteries, power banks, and solar chargers to ensure a smooth trekking experience without worrying about running out of power.

Network & Communication
Staying connected in the remote Himalayas is possible, but network availability varies based on location and weather conditions. Major villages like Pokhara, Chhomrong, and Jhinu Danda have Wi-Fi and cellular networks, but as you move higher, connectivity becomes weaker. Tea houses provide Wi-Fi services for a small fee, but the connection may be slow and unreliable, especially in high-altitude areas like Deurali, Annapurna Base Camp, and High Camp.

For mobile connectivity, Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell provide the best coverage in the Annapurna region. Among the two, NTC has slightly better network coverage in remote areas, while Ncell offers faster internet in lower regions. It is recommended to buy a local SIM card in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek and activate a data package for occasional internet access.

For emergency communication, Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition provides satellite phones or radio communication in case of network failures. Our guides also stay in touch with local authorities and other teams to ensure safety. While network coverage may not be consistent throughout the trek, staying connected with loved ones is still possible at certain points along the route.

Weather Conditions
The weather in the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal region varies depending on the season, altitude, and time of day. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best weather conditions, with clear skies, mild temperatures, and breathtaking mountain views. In spring, daytime temperatures range between 10°C to 20°C in lower altitudes and -5°C to -10°C at higher elevations, while autumn temperatures are slightly cooler but still comfortable for trekking.

During winter (December-February), the temperature drops significantly, especially at higher altitudes like ABC and High Camp, where it can reach as low as -15°C to -20°C. Heavy snowfall may cause trail blockages, making the trek more challenging. However, winter offers a peaceful trekking experience with fewer crowds and stunning snow-covered landscapes. Trekkers choosing winter should be well-prepared with proper cold-weather gear.

The monsoon season (June-August) brings heavy rainfall, cloudy skies, and slippery trails, making it the least favorable time for trekking. However, the lower valleys remain lush and green, and post-monsoon (late August to early September) offers clearer skies and fresh mountain views. Trekkers during monsoon should be cautious of leeches, landslides, and wet conditions and carry appropriate rain gear.

Regardless of the season, weather in the mountains can change rapidly, so it is essential to be prepared with layered clothing, rain protection, and proper trekking gear. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition provides expert guidance on weather conditions and ensures that trekkers are well-equipped for all possible scenarios, making the journey safe and enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) and Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek, suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. The trek involves daily hikes of 5 to 7 hours, with steep ascents, stone staircases, and occasional rugged paths. While no technical climbing is required, the altitude, long trekking hours, and continuous ascents and descents can make the trek physically demanding.

Proper preparation, including regular cardio exercises, hiking practice, and strength training, can help improve endurance. Acclimatization is key to avoiding altitude sickness, so trekkers should pace themselves, stay hydrated, and follow the guidance of experienced guides. With the right mindset and fitness level, this trek is achievable and incredibly rewarding.

Trekkers need two essential permits for the Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trek:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), required to enter and trek through the Annapurna region.
  • Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card. A mandatory trekking permit to ensure safety and track trekkers in the region.

Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara before the trek. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition handles all necessary permits and paperwork, ensuring a hassle-free experience for trekkers.

Accommodations along the trek are in tea houses and lodges, which are basic but comfortable. The rooms are twin-sharing with simple bedding, blankets, and pillows. While lower-altitude tea houses may have attached bathrooms, higher-altitude lodges offer shared bathroom facilities. At Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal High Camp, accommodations are more basic due to the remoteness of the region.

While the rooms are warm and cozy, temperatures at night can drop significantly, so bringing a good-quality sleeping bag is recommended. Despite the simplicity, the hospitality of the local Gurung and Magar communities makes the stay a memorable part of the trekking experience.

Tea houses offer a variety of Nepali and international meals to keep trekkers energized. The most common and recommended meal is Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles), as it provides high energy and unlimited servings. Other food options include noodles, pasta, fried rice, chapati, curries, momos (dumplings), soups, pancakes, and porridge. Breakfast options include eggs, bread, pancakes, and tea or coffee.

While meat is available in some places, it is recommended to stick to vegetarian meals at higher altitudes for freshness and digestion. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition ensures hygienic and nutritious meals throughout the trek, keeping trekkers fueled for the journey ahead.

Yes, drinking water is available at tea houses, lodges, and natural streams along the trail. However, bottled water gets expensive as you go higher, and plastic waste is discouraged in the conservation area. The best option is to refill bottles with boiled or purified water from lodges.

Trekkers should carry water purification tablets, a portable water filter, or a SteriPEN to make tap or stream water safe for drinking. Staying hydrated is crucial to preventing altitude sickness and fatigue, so trekkers should drink at least 3-4 liters of water per day.

The best seasons for the Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trek are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Spring is especially beautiful with rhododendron blooms, while autumn provides crisp mountain air and excellent visibility.

Winter (December-February) is cold with heavy snowfall, making the trek more challenging but less crowded. The monsoon season (July-August) brings heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and limited mountain views, making it the least recommended time for trekking. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition organizes treks in all seasons, providing proper guidance and preparation for different weather conditions.

The highest point of the trek is Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m) and Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4500 m), where altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness) can be a concern. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath.

To prevent altitude sickness, trekkers should ascend gradually, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and follow a proper acclimatization schedule. In case of severe symptoms, descending immediately is the best remedy. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition ensures a well-paced itinerary with acclimatization days and trained guides who monitor trekkers' health.

Charging facilities are available in tea houses, but at higher altitudes, electricity is limited and may require an extra fee ($2–$5 per device). To avoid extra costs, trekkers are advised to bring power banks and solar chargers.

Wi-Fi is available at some lodges for an extra charge, but the connection can be slow and unreliable, especially in remote areas like Annapurna Base Camp and High Camp. For communication, buying a local NTC or Ncell SIM card before the trek is recommended, as these networks provide intermittent coverage in lower-altitude areas. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition also provides emergency communication services for safety.

Essential trekking gear includes:

Trekking boots (well-broken-in and waterproof)

Warm clothing (layers, down jacket, gloves, hat, and thermal wear)

Rain jacket and backpack cover (especially during monsoon)

Sleeping bag (-10°C to -20°C rating recommended)

Trekking poles (helpful for steep ascents and descents)

Water bottle & purification tablets

Headlamp, sunscreen, sunglasses, and first aid kit

Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition provides sleeping bags and down jackets on a returnable basis, ensuring trekkers are well-prepared for varying conditions.
