The Nar Phu Valley, Teri La Pass, and Upper Mustang Trek is a captivating adventure that takes you through some of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich regions. This trek combines the rugged beauty of Nar Phu Valley, the stunning Teri La Pass at 5,499 meters, and the mystical landscapes of Upper Mustang. You will experience ancient Tibetan culture, traditional villages like Lo Manthang, and breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, making it a unique journey for adventurous trekkers.
This trek is considered challenging due to its high altitude, steep ascents, and variable weather conditions. The Teri La Pass is the highest point of the trek, and trekkers should be prepared for physical demands and potential altitude sickness. A good level of fitness and prior trekking experience, especially in high-altitude environments, is recommended. Proper acclimatization is crucial, and it’s advisable to take your time to adjust to the altitude throughout the trek.
Teri La Pass offers some of the most stunning panoramic views in the region. From the summit, trekkers can enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna range, including Annapurna II and IV, as well as the dramatic landscapes of the Mustang region. The crossing can be challenging, often requiring careful navigation over rocky terrain and possible snow. Reaching the pass is a significant achievement and a highlight of the trek, providing a profound sense of accomplishment.
Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, is a unique walled city that offers a glimpse into Tibetan culture and history. With its ancient monasteries, traditional mud-brick houses, and rich heritage, Lo Manthang is a fascinating destination for cultural exploration. Upper Mustang is often referred to as "the last forbidden kingdom" due to its distinct Tibetan influence and restricted access. The region is known for its stark beauty, with arid landscapes, unique rock formations, and a deep-rooted sense of spirituality.
To trek in Nar Phu Valley and Upper Mustang, you will need several permits, including the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), the Nar Phu Valley Special Permit, and the Upper Mustang Permit. The latter two require prior arrangements and must be obtained through a registered trekking agency. It’s essential to ensure that all permits are in order before starting your trek to avoid any complications.
The best seasons for trekking in this region are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather conditions, clear skies, and moderate temperatures, making for optimal trekking conditions. Spring features blooming wildflowers, while autumn showcases beautiful fall colors. The monsoon season (June to August) can bring heavy rains, and winter (December to February) can lead to harsh conditions, making trekking difficult.
Accommodations along the Nar Phu Valley and Upper Mustang Trek primarily consist of teahouses and lodges that offer basic amenities, including meals and sleeping arrangements. While options may be limited in remote areas, most lodges provide a warm and comfortable atmosphere to relax after a day of trekking. Camping may be necessary in certain sections of the trek, particularly around Teri La Pass.
Packing for this trek requires careful consideration of the weather and altitude. Essential items include sturdy trekking boots, warm and layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a sleeping bag suitable for cold weather, and a first aid kit. Trekking poles, a reliable backpack, and a hydration system are also highly recommended. It’s advisable to bring snacks and energy bars for the trail, as options can be limited in remote areas.
While it is possible to trek independently in some regions of Nepal, hiring a guide is highly recommended for the Nar Phu Valley, Teri La Pass, and Upper Mustang Trek. An experienced guide can enhance your experience by providing insights into local culture and history, ensuring your safety, and assisting with navigation through challenging terrain. This support is especially valuable in more remote areas where trails may not be well marked.
The trek typically begins in Koto or Jagat, accessible by a combination of jeep and bus rides from Besisahar or Kathmandu. The journey usually takes about 6-8 hours by road, depending on your starting point. Cime Himalaya Trek & Expedition can help arrange transportation and logistics, ensuring a smooth transition to the trailhead, so you can focus on enjoying your trekking adventure in this beautiful part of Nepal.
